http://www.timeland.co.jp/
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Fifty-eighth Session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific 10-14 September 2007, Jeju, Republic of Korea JEJU, Republic of Korea, Sept. 14 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- A significant annual reduction in deaths from noncommunicable diseases is not going to happen unless countries and areas adopt a "whole-of-society" approach to noncommunicable diseases prevention and control, the World Health Organization said. (Logo: http://www.xprn.com.cn/xprn/sa/20061102095006-51.jpg ) Addressing the Regional Committee for the Western Pacific, WHO Regional Director Shigeru Omi said that in order to achieve the goal, "all sectors, from government to private enterprises, civil society and communities, will have to work together." In 2005, WHO proposed a global goal of reducing the projected trend of chronic disease death rates by 2% each year until 2015. High on the list of chronic diseases are cardiovascular diseases (mainly heart disease and stroke), cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes and obesity. Approximately 17 million people die prematurely each year as a result of the global epidemic of chronic diseases, which is the leading cause of death in the world today. The vast majority of cases are caused by a small number of known and preventable risk factors. Three of the most important are unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and tobacco use. Pacific health ministers had called for local solutions to strengthen efforts to combat noncommunicable diseases. As part of the "whole-of-society" approach, they urged national leaders to be role models for healthy lifestyles, including encouraging the population to eat nutritious local foods. The health ministers also called for better strategies to help reduce noncommunicable diseases. Strengthening health services that are under pressure from the growing burden of noncommunicable diseases is also part of the "whole-of-society" approach. In line with this, regional health leaders will meet in Singapore in November to identify solutions. "Unless national interventions are urgently taken to reduce the prevalence of chronic diseases, 36 million people will die of these diseases by 2015, nearly half of them before they turn 70," Dr Omi warned. The Regional Committee for the Western Pacific met in Jeju to review WHO's work in the Region and to provide guidance on further work. For more information, please contact: World Health Organization Ms Marilu Lingad Tel: +63-918-918-1094 Email: lingadm@wpro.who.int Mr Peter Cordingley Tel: +63-917-844-3688 Email: cordingleyp@wpro.who.int
Fifty-eighth Session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific 10-14 September 2007, Jeju, Republic of Korea JEJU, Republic of Korea, Sept. 14 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Dr Shigeru Omi, WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific, warned of increasing mental and neurological disorders in many countries in the Region, and the unmet need for treatment of these disorders. (Logo: http://www.xprn.com/xprn/sa/20061102095006-51-min.jpg ) Mental health is not high on the agenda in many countries and areas in the Region, and as a result, resources are scarce and difficult to access. Resource allocation is less than 1% of the total health budget in half of the countries and areas in the Region. A WHO global project found that among patients with mental disorders in less developed countries, as many as 85% received no treatment in the prior 12 months. "This is consistent with findings from our mental health situation analysis conducted in the Region," said Dr Omi. For 2002, the most recent year for which comprehensive data are available, mental and neurological disorders accounted for nearly 18% of the total disease burden in the Western Pacific Region, with depression alone responsible for more than 6% of that burden. There were approximately 331 000 suicides in the Region in 2002, and the number of cases would have been significantly reduced had there been more outreach programmes, Dr Omi noted. "The notion that mental disorders are problems of only wealthy, industrialized countries is simply wrong," Dr Omi said. "The poor are more likely to suffer from these disorders. Mental and neurological disorders can have a severe impact on the ability to earn a living, thereby contributing to the cycle of poverty." Integrating mental health care into general health services, particularly at the primary level, is expected to improve screening and treatment, limit the stigma associated with accepting treatment, and improve the treatment of physical problems of those suffering from mental illness. Dr Omi urged Member States to come up with innovative programmes as well as to further develop workforces necessary for modern mental health care. He cited the WHO Pacific Islands Mental Health Network (PIMHnet) as a good example. A joint initiative of the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific and WHO Headquarters, PIMHnet was launched in March 2007 to address geographical and resource constraints in the field of mental health. Seventeen countries and areas are currently members of PIMHnet, and more countries are expected to join this year. Dr Omi called on the Regional Committee for the Western Pacific, WHO's governing body in the Region, meeting in Jeju, to look into ways to overcome the major barriers that hamper the improvement of mental health services. Meanwhile, the Regional Committee urged Member States to increase political, financial and technical commitment in order to address mental, behavioural and neurological disorders. Fifty-eighth Session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific 10-14 September 2007, Jeju, Republic of Korea JEJU, Republic of Korea, Sept. 14 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- The World Health Organization has called for an all-out war against tobacco use in the Asia Pacific region now that almost all Members States are parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). (Logo: http://www.xprn.com.cn/xprn/sa/20061102095006-51.jpg ) "There is astonishing global momentum," Dr Shigeru Omi, WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific, told the Regional Committee for the Western Pacific at its fifty-eighth session in Jeju. "But this part of the world has a mandate and special responsibility to attack this scourge." Smoking kills more than 3000 people in the Western Pacific Region each day. The Region has one third of the world's smokers, the highest percentage of male smokers and the fastest increase of smoking among children and young women. By December 2006, all Member States of the WHO Western Pacific and South-East Asia Regions had ratified the WHO FCTC, with the exception of Indonesia. The WHO FCTC is an international treaty aimed at improving global health by reducing tobacco consumption through schemes such as tobacco price and tax increases and a ban on tobacco advertising and sponsorship. "Tobacco use, the world's leading cause of preventable death, is an epidemic that will kill 1 billion people this century unless governments in rich and poor countries alike get serious about preventing it," Dr Omi said. Reporting to the Regional Committee which is reviewing WHO's work in the Region, Dr Omi said that a few Western Pacific Member States already have met FCTC requirements, and that several more are making good progress in implementing Convention provisions. "In this Region, we will continue to aggressively promote evidence-based strategies such as tax and price measures, the expansion of smoke-free policies, comprehensive bans on advertising and promotion, stronger health warnings on tobacco products, and where possible, increasing access to cessation therapies," Dr Omi said. At the most recent meeting in July 2007, parties to the Convention adopted strong guidelines on second-hand smoke and established an intergovernmental negotiating body to start work on an anti-smuggling protocol on illicit trade. Work on several guidelines has also begun on packaging, labelling and advertising, promotion and sponsorship, tobacco industry interference, education, communication, training and public awareness as well as on cessation. "There is strength in numbers," said Dr Omi. "No country will be alone when they face down the tobacco industry and those who want to protect the continued spread of this deadly epidemic." (Integrated Oil Companies Top Annual List Due To High Oil Prices; Asian Company Representation and Performance Steady to Rising) SINGAPORE, Sept. 13 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Major oil and gas companies have consolidated their position as the world's most effective energy businesses, dominating the rankings in the annual Platts Top 250 Global Energy Companies, announced Thursday night. (Photo: http://www.xprn.com/xprn/sa/200709141044.jpg ) In an environment of continued high oil prices and climbing global demand, Exxon Mobil, BP and Royal Dutch Shell kept hold of the leadership spots, the definitive Platts rankings showed. Indeed, the only non-oil and gas companies to break into the top twenty positions were French super-utilities EDF Energy and Suez, placing 14th and 20th, respectively. The Platts Top 250 scores the world's top performing energy companies on a combination of assets, revenues, profits and return on invested capital. Platts announced this year's rankings at a gala dinner in Singapore to celebrate Asian winners in the Top 250, and Asia's growing prominence in the list. The dinner was attended by almost 200 energy executives from around the world. Singapore Minister of State for Trade and Industry Mr. Lee Yi Shyan presented the evening's keynote address on the challenges facing Asian energy companies. Best performing Asian energy business was Petrochina, which placed sixth worldwide, and ahead of many long-established western energy companies. Petrochina's oil output puts it on the same footing, in terms of scale, as medium-sized OPEC producers; and, measured on profits alone, it is the fourth most successful energy company in the world. Second, third, fourth and fifth in Asia were China Petroleum & Chemical Corp (Sinopec), India's Oil & Natural Gas Corporation, Thailand's PTT, and CNOOC from Hong Kong. The best performers in Europe, Africa and the Middle East were BP, Shell, Total, Norway's Statoil and Italy's ENI, in that order. In the Americas, Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Brazil's Petrobras, ConocoPhillips and Valero Energy topped the table. "Platts is proud to be bringing the energy and investment communities its highly respected Top 250 Energy Company rankings for the sixth year in a row," said Victoria Chu Pao, Platts president. "Under the current volatile and competitive market environment, this year's rankings are more important than ever in highlighting the truly world class performers in the energy industry. We congratulate all those businesses that have made our Top 250 list." For the first time in the rankings' history, Platts also scorecarded a Fastest-Growing Companies roster, an elite list of companies setting the pace in revenue growth terms. In particular, Asia's standouts in growth were China Resources Power Holdings with a 3-year compounded growth rate (CGR) of 131 percent, PT BUMI Resources of Indonesia at 65 percent growth, and Inpex Holdings of Japan with 52 percent growth. The strongest performing utilities in the world were all from Europe. In addition to EDF and Suez, Germany's E.ON, Gaz de France, Italy's Enel, Belgium's Electrabel and the UK's BG Group all crowded into the top 30 of the Top 250. All ranked companies have assets greater than (US) $2 billion and must be publicly listed companies. The underlying data come from the Compustat database, which is compiled and maintained by Standard & Poor's (like Platts, a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies).
