Texas Instruments Expands Voice over IP Portfolio with New Addition to IP Phone Product Suite
July 10, 2007
Flexible, Cost Effective Platform Offers Reduced Bill of Materials and Quick Time to Market for IP Phone Manufacturers BEIJING, July 5 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) today announced its newest IP phone platform, enabling manufacturers to deliver cost effective IP phones for the low-end enterprise, small and medium business (SMB), and residential markets. This new addition to TI's IP phone product suite leverages the company's extensive experience in the Voice over IP (VoIP) industry and is powered by TI's digital signal processors (DSP), enabling real-time signal processing, low-power consumption and tremendous flexibility for next-generation VoIP devices. The TNETV2502 offers manufacturers a complete turnkey system for developing cost effective IP phones with up to a 50 percent reduction in the bill of materials (BOM). (Logo: http://www.xprn.com.cn/xprn/sa/20061107170439-20.jpg ) According to recent In-Stat research, revenues for VoIP semiconductors will grow from just over $600 million in 2006 to $2.63 billion in 2010. IP phones will account for 60 percent of total VoIP semiconductor sales in 2010, demonstrating the viability of delivering products to support this growing market. The TNETV2502 incorporates TI's TMS320C55x(TM) DSP generation and a software license from Adaptive Digital Technologies Incorporated (Adaptive Digital) for the IP phone software package. Adaptive Digital, a long-time member of the TI DSP Third Party Network, has over ten years of experience developing and supporting VoIP software on TI DSPs, including the TMS320C5000? and TMS320C6000(TM) platforms. By collaborating with Adaptive Digital on the TNETV2502 platform, TI can quickly and effectively deliver a low-cost IP phone solution to its OEM and ODM customers, offering them a reduced time to market and decreased BOM. At the same time, the performance and flexibility of TI's DSPs coupled with Adaptive Digital's software allows manufacturers to deliver unmatched scalability to easily meet the evolving feature and standards requirements of the VoIP market. "We understand that for those business subscribers and residential users looking to capitalize on the cost savings of VoIP, low-end IP phones, like those based on the TNETV2502, are ideal to meet their requirements," said Brian McCarthy, president of Adaptive Digital. "As part of our continuing legacy with TI, we are proud to offer to manufacturers around the world a VoIP solution that can be customized and quickly deployed to meet the needs and demands of their customer base." By utilizing a TNETV2502-based IP phone, small and medium enterprises can easily take advantage of the benefits of VoIP without making a significant cost and time investment in more expensive VoIP handsets. Low-end IP phones provide the features and performance certain business and residential subscribers require without significant power consumption or the advanced functionality of more complex devices. These IP phones are typically characterized as having basic phone features with one voice port, which is one channel of G.711 or G.729AB, and basic SIP signaling and call control capabilities. Conferencing and other supplementary services are usually handled in the network, and additional codecs are optional. "We are committed to constantly expanding our product portfolio from low-end to high, delivering the right DSP-based VoIP technology for customers of all sizes and all requirements, with the ideal mix of features and performance to best meet their needs," said Fred Zimmerman, director of VoIP customer premises solutions for TI. "With the TNETV2502, TI is targeting a market segment that is often overlooked while delivering the benefits of our robust and field-proven VoIP solutions to business and residential subscribers looking to experience the many benefits of VoIP technology." TI's TNETV2502 includes the silicon, software and a complete reference design, offering manufacturers all the tools needed to develop IP phones. The software features run on TI's popular DSP/BIOS? operating system, reducing the amount of royalties that may be necessary for manufacturers developing IP phones with the platform. TI also offers indemnified codecs, further easing manufacturers challenges for delivering low-end IP phones to the market. TI's TNETV2502 reference design is also the first low-cost IP phone solution from TI incorporating the latest Power-over-Ethernet technology, which allows a phone to be powered directly from a standard Ethernet cable instead of an AC power supply. General availability of the TNETV2502 is expected in 3Q07. As the leading provider of VoIP solutions, TI has shipped over 500 million VoIP ports worldwide for the IP phone, customer premise equipment (CPE) gateway and high-density infrastructure markets. TI works with leading IP phone vendors worldwide and has the largest installed customer base and portfolio of field-hardened solutions to meet the demands of the growing VoIP market. About Texas Instruments Texas Instruments Incorporated provides innovative DSP and analog technologies to meet our customers' real world signal processing requirements. In addition to Semiconductor, the company includes the Education Technology business. The trials, which began in April in 10 Chinese cities, are an important step towards deploying the 3G technology for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Ernst and Young: Germany Scores Number One in Europe
July 10, 2007
BERLIN, July 4 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- A recent study commissioned by the international accounting firm Ernst and Young, the "European Attractiveness Survey 2007," highlights Germany's advantages as an outstanding investment location. Investors see Germany's infrastructure, quality of research and development, workforce education, and political stability as major advantages. The study asked over 800 active managers from many industries in European, American, and Asian firms between February and March 2007. On a worldwide scale the Federal Republic fell short only to China, the United States, and India. Investors find Germany to be an attractive location for R & D centers and for corporate headquarters. In both cases Germany is second place to the United States. Important criteria for decision makers are those where Germany excels: Logistics and infrastructure, potential increases in productivity, telecommunication infrastructure, and the transparency and stability of the political system were all ranked in the top five among factors investors look for in taking decisions. Germany saw an increase of 57% in total FDI projects last year in comparison with 2005. This data is especially encouraging when viewed versus other European countries. Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Russia all saw reductions in projects on an annual basis. France only realized a modest increase. The results of the study reflect the reasons that foreign investors are looking to Germany in emerging industries such as renewable energies. Foreign companies are, rather than turning to low cost countries, relocating, or "inshoring," to Germany for the country's expertise in engineering, research, and logistics. Labor costs are not as the only factor in location decisions, but rather productivity, where Germany is strong, is also important. 44% of investors expressed the belief that ecologically responsible environmental policies stimulate innovation and 30% considered environmental issues to play a strong role in investment decision making processes. Royal Caribbean Anchors in Asia
July 10, 2007
Company Establishes Asia-Pacific Headquarters in Singapore Rhapsody of the Seas to make Asian debut in December 2007 SINGAPORE, July 10 /Xinhua-PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE: RCL; Oslo), announces the opening in Singapore of its Asia-Pacific headquarters - Royal Caribbean Cruises (Asia) Pte. Ltd. The regional headquarters, which is located in Singapore's central business district, will support the marketing efforts in the Asia-Pacific region for three of the company's cruise brands: Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Cruises. Headed by Rama Rebbapragada, managing director for Asia Pacific, the office also will provide sales and trade support in the region. "Our expansion to the Asia-Pacific region is an integral part of our international business development and growth strategy, and it is an exciting time to be here," said Rebbapragada. "We will have Royal Caribbean International's Rhapsody of the Seas, the largest ship sailing in this region, 'homeported' here at the end of this year and we are committed to another Asia season in 2008-09, offering Asia-Pacific guests our unique and award-winning cruising experience." With the number of cruise guests sailing in the Asia-Pacific region projected to grow by more than 40 percent, from 1.07 million in 2005 to 1.5 million by 2010*, the opening of Royal Caribbean's Asia-Pacific regional office is strategically timed. Royal Caribbean International's range of cruise offerings is perfectly placed to take advantage of rapid economic growth and a renewed interest in cruising from key source markets in the region. Building on Royal Caribbean's success and expertise in the North American and European markets, the Asia-Pacific office will spearhead the company's expansion plans in the region and support growing demand for itineraries in the Asia Pacific. "This region shows great growth potential in terms of providing new destinations for international cruise guests from North America and Europe given the varied and exciting cultures throughout the region, and their accessibility to the coastline," said Adam Goldstein, president of Royal Caribbean International. "This, coupled with the prospect of Asian markets being substantial source markets for new cruise guests, gives us tremendous opportunity for growth in the region." The company's establishment of an Asia-Pacific office complements several other recent efforts that have been made to grow the cruise industry in Singapore. In 2005, the Singapore Cruise Centre underwent a $5 million facelift that aimed to strengthen its position as the nerve centre for the cruise industry in Asia. The Cruise Centre is expected to attract 1.2 million cruise passengers to Singapore by 2010. The Singapore Tourism Board also administers a $10 million fund set up jointly with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and the Singapore Cruise Centre to boost the local cruise industry and encourage major international cruise companies to partner with Singapore in product development and marketing initiatives. In December 2007, Royal Caribbean International's Rhapsody of the Seas will debut in Singapore. Rhapsody of the Seas will be the largest ship to cruise in Asia and will offer travelers a selection of six short cruises that will range from two to five nights and call at the tropical ports of Kuala Lumpur (Port Klang) and Penang, Malaysia, as well as the exotic sun-soaked islands of Langkawi, Malaysia; and Phuket, Thailand. Rhapsody of the Seas also will offer three spectacular 12-night voyages between Singapore and Hong Kong, each featuring two-day calls in Bangkok (Laemchabang), Thailand, and Hanoi Haiphong, Vietnam. These extended itineraries also include calls at Sihanoukville, Cambodia; and Saigon Vung Tau, Nha Trang and Hue Danang, Vietnam. The ship's Asia tour continues on from Hong Kong, where it will arrive in time for the Chinese New Year season, offering a series of itineraries calling at the ports of Okinawa, Japan; Taipei Keelung and Kaohsiung, Taiwan; and Sanya, China. The ship will then sail from Shanghai, China, with port calls in Japan and Korea. We are proud to present him with our highest honor-Lions International Humanitarian Award." Shriver has led the charge in educating the world about health care disparities among individuals with intellectual disabilities. Under his leadership, initiatives, such as the Healthy Athletes(R) program, have been developed to enhance the quality of life for millions of people with intellectual disabilities, including the more than 2.5 million Special Olympics athletes and their families in more than 160 countries. Since 2001, Special Olympics and Lions Clubs International have partnered to improve vision care for Special Olympics athletes worldwide through the Special Olympics-Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes(R) program. Opening Eyes also educates vision specialists on how to best treat the intellectual disability population. More than 100,000 athletes have been screened through the Opening Eyes partnership, with prescription eyewear provided to more than 44,000 athletes. "Thousands of Special Olympics athletes' lives have been transformed through the Opening Eyes program, including an athlete who went on to win a gold medal in a track competition because he could finally see the finish line," said Shriver. "I am honored to receive this award on behalf of Special Olympics and our Healthy Athletes initiative which continues to be a catalyst for change. Together with Lions Clubs International, we are showing how a strong social partnership makes a sustainable impact on the global, underserved intellectual disability population." Comprised of seven unique disciplines -- Fit Feet, FUNfitness, Health Promotion, Healthy Hearing, MedFest, Opening Eyes, and Special Smiles(R) -- the program goal is to improve training and competition by focusing on the overall health and fitness of Special Olympics athletes through basic health screenings, educational information and referrals for follow-up care as needed. Implemented globally, nearly 500,000 screenings have been completed since program inception and more than 50,000 health professionals and volunteers have received training for working with patients with intellectual disabilities; this training helps health professionals increase their knowledge, comfort level and competence in working with patients with intellectual disabilities and enables them to bring these skills back to their communities. Global Partners Launch Renewed Battle Against Chagas the 'Kissing Bug' Disease
July 10, 2007
Strategy Set Out to Eliminate Disease GENEVA, July 4 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- A new effort to eliminate Chagas disease by 2010 will be launched tomorrow at a World Health Organization (WHO) meeting of disease experts and partners. The strategy is designed to answer key questions about the treatment and control of Chagas disease, and to coordinate global efforts toward the prevention of transmission through a new Global Network for Chagas Elimination. (Logo: http://www.xprn.com.cn:9080/xprn/sa/20061102095006-51.jpg ) "The establishment of the WHO Global Network to combat Chagas disease occurs in the broader context of the WHO's renewed fight against neglected tropical diseases. The prospects for reducing the burden caused by these diseases have changed dramatically in the past few years. While Chagas disease is controlled in many countries in the Americas, commitment must be strengthened as elimination of the disease is now attainable. Cases identified in non-endemic countries have demonstrated the need to globalize our efforts," said Dr Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General. Chagas disease is a serious, potentially life-threatening illness caused by a protozoan parasite called T. cruzi. Early symptoms can include fever, fatigue, swollen glands and heart pain, but in later years the infection can lead to chronic debilitation caused by progressive destruction of the heart muscle. It occurs mainly in Latin America where, during the 1980s, over 20 million people were thought to be infected. Since then, Latin American countries have made enormous efforts to control the infection, such that current estimates suggest that less than 8 million people remain infected. However, the infection is no longer confined to the Americas because of blood transmission and organ transplantation. Cases have been identified in non-endemic countries in Europe, and in Canada and the United States. "Remarkable success has been achieved in the Region of the Americas in eliminating vectorial transmission of Chagas. Much remains to be done, however, to reduce the risk of transmission to recipients of blood or blood products obtained from migrants from Chagas endemic areas, and to ensure screening and diagnosis of congenital Chagas disease," said Dr Mirta Roses, Director of the Pan American Health Organization and Regional Director of the WHO Americas Region. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has worked with the countries on sub-regional initiatives to prevent, control and treat Chagas with key partners, including Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Agence Canadienne de Developpement International (ACDI), Agencia Espa?ola de Cooperacion Internacional (AECI), Medecins sans Frontieres (MSF), International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and others. "The Pan American Health Organization's successes in Chagas' control are a significant contribution to the global strategy to eliminate this debilitating disease," said Dr David L. Heymann, WHO's Assistant Director-General for Communicable Diseases. "The new WHO Global Network for Chagas Elimination will ensure we leverage and expand upon the successes in Latin America." The parasite that causes Chagas disease is called T. cruzi and is mainly transmitted by large blood-sucking insects, sometimes known as 'kissing bugs', which often colonize the homes of poorer rural communities in Latin America. But the parasite can also be transmitted by blood transfusion or organ transplant from infected donors, and occasionally by transplacental passage from infected mother to new-born baby. In some regions, particularly in the southern cone countries of South America, the chronic infection can also give rise to severe intestinal problems requiring complex corrective surgery. Comprised of expert-led technical groups, the WHO Global Network will focus on several key aspects of the Chagas problem including: -- Strengthening epidemiological surveillance and information systems; -- Preventing transmission by blood transfusion and organ transplantation in endemic and non-endemic countries; -- Identifying a diagnostic test(s) for screening and diagnosis of infections; -- Expanding secondary prevention of congenital transmission and case management of congenital and non-congenital infections; and -- Promoting a consensus on adequate case management. In keeping with the goal of eliminating Chagas disease by 2010, the WHO Global Network will develop a five-pillar strategy before the end of this year. The efforts to eliminate Chagas disease are enhanced by the pharmaceutical industry, which is providing financial support to the Network, along with donations of one of the two drugs known to be effective for the treatment of the disease. Earlier this year, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan -- together with partners from across the public, private and non-governmental sectors -- launched a campaign to address neglected diseases. An estimated 1 billion people are affected by one or more of these diseases, very often the victims are among the poorest populations. New Study Shows that Extending Prophylaxis with Clexane(R) / Lovenox(R) (Enoxaparin Sodium Injection) to 5 Weeks is more Effective than 10 Days for Reducing the Risk of Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) in Acutely Ill Medical Patients with Reduced Mobility
July 10, 2007
- EXCLAIM is the First International Study to Show that Extended Thromboprophylaxis Reduces VTE Risk in Acutely-Ill Medical Patients with a Statistically Significant 44% PARIS, July 9 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Sanofi-aventis announced today the results of the EXCLAIM (Extended Clinical prophylaxis in Acutely Ill Medical patients) study, which showed the benefit of extended prophylaxis in acutely ill medical patients with reduced mobility by demonstrating the superiority of 5 weeks course of prophylaxis with Clexane(R)/Lovenox(R) compared to 10 days regimen with a statistically significant 44% reduction in venous thromboembolism (VTE) events (Deep Vein Thrombosis and / or Pulmonary Embolism). The findings were presented at the XXIst ISTH Congress (International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis) in Geneva, Switzerland. Acutely ill medical patients are at high risk of VTE. The benefit of thromboprophylaxis with enoxaparin (10 plus or minus 4 days) has already been demonstrated in this patient population and is considered as the standard regimen(1). Nonetheless clinical practice suggests that the risk of VTE may continue beyond 10 days(1) particularly in patients with reduced mobility. The efficacy and safety of extended prophylaxis in this medical population had never been assessed although it has been demonstrated for several high-risk surgical patient populations(2,3) and therefore recommended by international guidelines(4). The objective of EXCLAIM study was to assess the superiority of enoxaparin prophylaxis given for 28 plus or minus 4 days versus placebo, both following an initial treatment with enoxaparin for 10 plus or minus 4 days, to reduce VTE events rate. The primary efficacy endpoint was the incidence of asymptomatic deep-vein thrombosis (DVT), symptomatic DVT, symptomatic pulmonary embolism (PE), or fatal PE during the double-blind period. The statistically significant 44% relative risk reduction in VTE events observed for extended-duration prophylaxis with enoxaparin vs. placebo for the primary endpoint (2.8% vs. 4.9%; p=0.0011) was associated with a reduction in symptomatic VTE by 73% (0.3% vs. 1.1%; p=0.0044) and asymptomatic proximal DVT by 34% (2.5% vs. 3.7%; p=0.0319). No statistically significant differences were observed for symptomatic pulmonary embolism (PE) or fatal PE. The statistically significant relative risk reduction of VTE observed with enoxaparin at 38 days was maintained at 90 days (3.0% vs. 5.2%; p=0.0015). Victor F. Tapson, MD, Professor of Medicine, Director, Center for Pulmonary Vascular Disease, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC, and a lead investigator of the EXCLAIM study said: "What the trial results showed is that patients do not leave their risk for VTE at the door when they leave the hospital. With continued prophylaxis, Lovenox(R) statistically significantly reduced the risk by 44% in acutely ill medical patients with prolonged immobility." In comparison with placebo, the rate of major bleeding was statistically significantly higher in the extended enoxaparin arm (0.6% vs. 0.15%, p=0.019), but the overall event rate was low. There was no difference in all-cause mortality between extended enoxaparin vs. placebo at 6 months (10.1% vs. 8.9%; p=0.18). "EXCLAIM is the first study to assess the benefit of extended thromboprophylaxis in acutely ill medical patients with reduced mobility and to demonstrate the clinical benefit of 5 weeks enoxaparin treatment versus 10 days in this patient population" said Professor Russell Hull from the University of Calgary, Canada and Chair of the Steering Committee for the EXCLAIM study. "Similarly to the initial demonstration of the benefit of thromboprophylaxis for acutely ill medical patients, first established by the MEDENOX trial, the EXCLAIM study should be a landmark trial in advancing the standard of care of patients at high risk for VTE and it further establishes enoxaparin as a reference treatment for VTE prophylaxis in acutely ill medical patients". About EXCLAIM The EXCLAIM trial is the first international, multicenter, prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. It enrolled 5,105 acutely-ill patients with recent reduced mobility in 20 countries, comparing extended-duration (28 plus or minus 4 days) venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis with enoxaparin, a low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) with the standard regimen of enoxaparin (10 plus or minus 4 days) for the prophylaxis of VTE. Patients recently immobilized for up to 3 days with level 1 mobility (total bed rest or sedentary patients) or with level 2 mobility (with bathroom privileges) with age > 75 years or history of VTE or diagnosis of cancer and predefined acute medical illness were randomized to received enoxaparin 40 mg subcutaneously once daily for 10 plus or minus 4 days and were then randomized to receive the same enoxaparin regimen or placebo for an additional 28 plus or minus 4 days. The steering committee followed the Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) suggestion that in addition to level 1 mobility patients to re-define the inclusion criteria by adding on level 2 mobility patients inclusion criteria: Age >75 years, or prior VTE or diagnosed cancer. The objective of the Exclaim study was to assess the superiority of enoxaparin prophylaxis given for 28 plus or minus 4 days versus placebo, both following an initial treatment with enoxaparin for 10 plus or minus 4 days, to reduce VTE events. The primary efficacy endpoint was the incidence of asymptomatic deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) detected by routine standardized ultrasonography, symptomatic DVT, symptomatic pulmonary embolism (PE), or fatal PE during the double-blind period. Secondary efficacy endpoints include the incidence of VTE at 3 months and the incidence of mortality up to 6 months after enrolment. The primary safety endpoint was major hemorrhagic complications during the same period. About venous thromboembolism (VTE) Venous thromboembolism is a general term used to describe the formation of a blood clot (thrombus) that blocks a vein. This may occur in any part of the venous system, but the most common manifestations are deep-vein thrombosis (DVT), usually in the leg, and pulmonary embolism (PE). VTE is also a common complication among acutely-ill medical patients who have recently been immobilized, a population of medically-ill patients at particularly high-risk for VTE. About Clexane(R) / Lovenox(R) (enoxaparin) Lovenox(R) is a unique chemical entity in a class of antithrombotic agents known as low-molecular weight heparin (LMWH). The no. 1 selling low-molecular weight heparin in the world, Lovenox(R) is obtained by alkaline degradation of heparin benzyl ester and is about one-third the molecular size of unfractionated heparin. Lovenox(R) is the most widely studied LMWH, with 20 years of use in the treatment of 185 million patients in 96 countries. Its clinical applications are linked to its antithrombotic properties. It is used to inhibit clot formation in venous and arterial vessels to prevent potential acute or chronic complications of venous or arterial thrombosis. As with all anticoagulants, the most frequently reported side effect with Lovenox(R) is bleeding. Clinical indications for Lovenox(R) may vary from one country to another.
